Mary  has been living and teaching the Green Life for so long that she is affectionately called the “Grandmother of Green”. Her love for nature and sustainability naturally developed from growing up on a farm.
Mary is an education enthusiast. She has a Master’s degree in Administration and Supervision and a Master’s in Environmental Science. She has been certified in the following areas: Home Energy Star Rater, Building Professional Institute Rater, System Visions Rater, NC Green Homes Rater, National Association of Realtors GREEN, ECO Agent and Build Green Real Estate Agent.
Mary moved to Asheville, NC in 2003. She and her wife Deb had plans to create a community around a farm that demonstrated the different types of green building principles. At the time, this was such an odd concept that investors couldn’t grasp the benefits.  Today, Mary and Deb live in the primer agrihood development, Olivette, in Asheville.  Working closely with her builder, Mary designed a Platinum level Green Build NC, Net Zero home. In 2019, her home won the NC Home Builders’ award for the most energy efficient home in the state!
Mary has worked as a real estate and green consultant with organizations such as Land of Sky Realtors Association, Asheville Home Builders Associations, Green Built Alliance, Asheville Habitat For Humanity, Mountain Housing Opportunities, Hendersonville Housing Authority, Asheville City and Asheville Buncombe Community Christian Ministry. She has helped create certification programs and workshops, as well as the sustainable building project Prospect Terrace and the weatherization of the Veteran Restoration Quarters.
In 2016, Mary received the National Association Realtors Evergreen Award. She is a sought-out expert for her knowledge in both the green building and real estate industry. She has been featured in the National Association of Home Builders Women’s magazine, National Association of Realtors GREEN newsletters and Asheville City Work Place Challenge.
